You may see your tire pressure monitoring system light go on unexpectedly during one particular cold morning, or your tires can visually look deflated.
Why do car tires deflate when it’s cold? Well air molecules slow down when temperature drops and take up less space in the tire. When the air contracts there is less force on the tire walls and thus the tire pressure drops. Tyre pressure in psi (pound-force per square inch) can drop with 1 to 2 psi for every 5.5 degrees Celsius (10 degrees Fahrenheit). So when winter is here make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended pressure for your car. When seasons change to hot summer months your tire pressure will increase again so make sure to deflate them again to recommended pressure.
