In the UK your vehicle needs to go through a roadworthy test each year. When you have passed your MOT you get a MOT certificate indicating that your vehicle is legal to drive.
Passing the MOT means that at the time of the test your vehicle met the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by law. You can face a hefty fine driving without a MOT.
How long is an MOT certificate usually valid for? An Mot certificate lasts for a year and the date it expires is printed on the MOT certificate. Your MOT must be renewed before it expires and not the day it expires. There are no grace period concerning MOT certificate. When it expired you are only allowed to drive to the garage where you will be doing a MOT retest. When pulled over by the police, you must be able to prove that you have a MOT appointment. Your vehicle insurance will also not be valid with an expired MOT certificate.
Can I drive with failed MOT? If you went early for MOT test and failed, but your MOT certificate is still valid you are still allowed to drive the vehicle up till the day before it expires.
