Do tires have a left and right side?

It depends on the type of tires you have as there are a few different designs in tires. The normal/standard non performance tires that you find in passenger cars are often symmetrical in design. That means the tread of the inner halve and outer halve is the same. These tires you can fit any way around and are very versatile. Then some high performance tires are directional, this means the tires should only rotate in one direction where the right direction is shown on the tire.

These tires are fitted on sports cars and can handle extreme speeds. Their tread patterns are designed to disperse water extremely efficiently and are ideal for wet weather. Dry weather performance has also increased. Fitting it the wrong way around shouldn’t be dangerous, but the tires will not perform that well. Directional tires can also be rotated for a longer lifetime.

Asymmetrical tires are purely for high performance driving and are fitted on sports cars. They have a different inner and outer tread. The inner part of the tread is designed for gripping in poor/wet weather conditions. The outer halves have more aggressive tread blocks for better cornering. Asymmetrical tires don’t last nearly as long as symmetrical ones and can not be rotated.
